The past June 21st, 2017, witnessed the signature of the Protocol for the Creation of a Contemporary Art Museum, a document which manifests the will of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Junta de León y Castilla, Arévalo’s Council, and the Fundación Lumbreras – Colección Adrastus to collaborate in the development and consolidation of COLLEGIUM: Production · Research · Art. In addition, the museographic project COLLEGIUM was briefly presented, displaying the artistic, educational, historical, and cultural significance of the site inserted within the project’s values.

Among the attendees, we highlight the presence of the Minister of Culture and Tourism, María Josefa García Cirac; the Director of Cultural Policies of the Junta de León y Castilla, Mar Sancho Sanz; Arévalo’s Mayor, D. Vidal Galicia; Founder and President of the Fundación Lumbreras-Colección Adrastus, Javier Lumbreras; Co-Founder of the Fundación Lumbreras-Colección Adrastus, Lorena Lumbreras; the architect, Tatiana Bilbao; and the curator Patrick Charpenel.

This act represents a new beginning for Arévalo and Spain.

COLLEGIUM aspires to the highest purpose of a visionary cultural institution with the aim to generate social welfare. Such a complex undertaking implicates serious fiduciary, legal, public trust, and stewardship obligations, which can only be achieved through the creation of a social philanthropy along with the local entities. The unique vision of this project provides unique opportunities to change the path of deterioration through the architectural restoration within the context of a rejuvenated patrimony that will safeguard the Arévalo region’s strong history and cultural identity. This pairing is at the same time a generator of identity, metamorphosis, and knowledge. COLLEGIUM will serve as an axis from which Arévalo dialogues with the world, capturing the transformative power of radical contemporary art to revitalize the local economy through employment and professional opportunities, celebrating and sustaining the city’s cultural and intellectual life. COLLEGIUM, therefore, is a tool, not a goal.
