An exhibition to rethink the legacies of the Baroque from a contemporary point of view.

Sustancia-SUSTANCIAS is an exhibition conceived by curator Patrick Charpenel for the Church of San Martín, in the municipality of Arévalo. It marks the beginning of Abierto por Obras, Collegium's first project, conceived as a prologue to the constitution and construction of the building that will house the museum. Abierto por Obras entails a series of exhibitions and artistic actions inside the Church of San Martín de Arévalo, with the involvement of prominent national and international contemporary artists.

The exhibition Sustancia-SUSTANCIAS puts in dialogue the series of Goya's Caprices with works by twenty-five contemporary artists, and is constructed from a critical reading of the traditional principles of the Baroque. Can something be what it is not? Can there be a relationship between things of different natures? What connection exists between the sacred and the profane? These questions invite us to rethink the meaning and significance of the Baroque in the context of the cultural production of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

The exhibition includes works by Francisco Goya y Lucientes, Leonor Antunes, Felipe Arturo, Kasper Bosmans, Carol Bove, Mauricio Cattelan, Nina Chanel Abney, Moira Davey, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Jos de Gruyter & Harald Thys, Vicente de Mello, Jorge Eduardo Eielson, Peter Fischli, Mathias Goeritz, Douglas Gordon, David Hammons, Iman Issa, Hayv Kahraman, Engel Leonardo, Teresa Margolles, Jordan Nassar, Wilfredo Prieto, Mariela Scafati, James Siena and Tavares Strachan.
